Abstract

This research purposed was to know students’ ability and difficulty in using simple past tense. The focus of this study was on the students’ ability in using simple past tense. The participants of the study was 21 of the second grade students of MA NW Sakinatul Walidain Boro’ Gerung. An analysis of the test answer the research question, there were 1.What are students’ difficulties in writing simple past tense sentence? And 2.What are the challengees in understanding the simple past tense theoretically and practically?. The research design of study was descriptive analysis. The result of the test was analyzed to know the students’ ability using simple past tense. 50% students were found difficulties in formula, 50% in grammar and 75% made sentence. Students was get difficulties in writing simple past tense especially in making sentences. In addition, the result of test showed that the students’ ability in using the simple past tense is on low level. Keywords: an analysis, ability, the simple past tense.
