Abstract
This study aims to determine the students’ abilities and problems in writing report texts. There are two problem statements formulated: (1) How is the students’ ability in writing report texts of MA NWDI Perian? (2) What are the students’ problems in writing report texts in the eleventh graders of MA NWDI Perian? This research is a mix method. The model is sequential explanatory (quantitative descriptive-qualitative). The population of this study was the second semester students of XI class. The sample in quantitative study was all students in XI class. In qualitative research were students who have difficulty in writing report texts. Instruments to collect data were written tests and interviews. The first stage was asked students to write report texts to determine their ability and then asked a number of questions to the students related to the results of the data obtained from quantitative data. Based on the results of quantitative data analysis, the mean score was 52.19 while the KKM for English lessons was 70. This indicates that the students’ ability in writing report texts is low or below the standard. There are five components that are assessed, of the five components students’ ability levels are fair which is still relatively low. The percentages of each assessment include content 21%, organization 21%, vocabulary 18%, language 18% and mechanic 22%. Meanwhile, the results of qualitative data analysis showed that students’ difficulties in writing report texts were content, organization, vocabulary, language and mechanics, same as the results obtained by the previous data, which means that the quantitative data is supported by qualitative data.
