Abstract
This study aims to identify the problems faced by English as a foreign language (EFL) learners in pronouncing the -ed sound at the end of words. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The population in this study were students of English Study Program and the sample in this study amounted to 15 students of class 3A as participants. The researcher used observation, voice recording, and interview as data collection tools. The result of the investigation shows that the students ‘ability in pronouncing –ed ending is still poor. Based on the analysis, they had difficulty in determining the sound of the -ed ending. Meanwhile, the easiest for them is the suffix -ed after [d] and [t] which is [id]. The problems faced by the students in pronouncing –ed ending may be caused by their could not differentiate the –ed ending words and lack of knowledge of the pronunciation of –ed ending. It is also possible that they know the theory well, but they are not able to pronounce it properly. Factors that influence the problem include English is not the students' mother tongue, English has its own pronunciation rules, especially the English has its own pronunciation rules especially for the ending ed, motivation to pronounce words correctly affects students' skills, students find it difficult to distinguish the ending -ed, and students only know the theory but never practice the word ending -ed. Based on the result obtained, it is expected that the English teachers should give more drills and practice to the students in pronouncing –ed ending. For the students, they should learn and practice the pronunciation of –ed ending more. Keywords: EFL Learners Problems, Pronunciation of –ed
