Abstract

This research investigates the psychological barriers that affect English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in developing their speaking proficiency at Hamzanwadi University. This study specifically focuses on four major psychological factors. The findings revealed that anxiety was the most dominant barrier, often leading to hesitation, nervousness, and unclear speech. Lack of self-confidence caused students to avoid speaking opportunities and remain silent during classroom discussions. Fear of making mistakes, including mispronunciation and grammatical errors, further restricted their fluency and willingness to communicate. In addition, low motivation reduced students’ persistence in practicing and engaging actively in speaking tasks. Despite the presence of supportive learning environments and encouragement from peers and lecturers, psychological barriers remained significant challenges that hindered students’ speaking performance. This study suggests that addressing these psychological factors is essential to improve students’ fluency, clarity, and overall speaking proficiency. Keywords: psychological barriers, anxiety, self-confidence, fear of mistakes, motivation, speaking proficiency, EFL students
