Abstract
Amid the demand to master English as a fundamental international language, English teachers are required to promote students’ language proficiency, particularly in reading skills to broaden their knowledge horizons. However, due to the divergence of reading preferences which subsequently affects students’ comprehension, teachers oftentimes find it challenging to adjust strategies for students. This study aimed to figure out what types of reading materials students love to read, and how the teachers take strategies to promote students’ reading interest, and motivation as the factors influencing students’ reading comprehension. This study adopted a qualitative design and case study as the approach by utilizing three data collection methods: observation, focused-group discussion, and interview. A purposive sampling technique was used to select samples involving six students and three English teachers. To analyze the data, this study employed thematic analysis and analysis procedures by Kawulich (2015) commenced by narrating, coding, interpreting, confirming, and displaying the data. The findings demonstrated that all students were prone to reading fictional books like short stories, folklore, and fairytales which further elevated their reading interests and motivation. Some strategies implemented by the teachers included managing fun activities, games, Berugak Literacy, storytelling competitions, and promoting students’ vocabulary size. Two challenges were encountered: students’ lack of vocabulary and low motivation. This study contributes to the significance of reading preferences on students’ reading interests, motivations, and comprehension, and teachers’ strategies for tackling students’ reading issues and escalating their learning engagement.
