Abstract
This study describes the factors causing students' difficulties in writing thesis proposals at Hamzanwadi University. In this study, the researcher used a descriptive quantitative qualitative design. The population and subjects of this study consisted of 20 students as the sample. In this study, the researcher used a questionnaire and interviews. The questionnaire was used to identify the most significant factors causing of students' difficulties in writing thesis proposals, while the interviews were used to uncover the obstacles problem of students’ difficulties in writing thesis. The data showed that the biggest factor causing students struggle in writing proposals is the linguistic factor with a percentage of 42.35%, while sociocultural factors came as the second-largest impact with a percentage of 41,4%. About 41.2% of students faced difficulties related to the personality factor, and lastly, 40,2% students encountered difficulties in the cognitive factor. Among these four factors, it can be concluded that the linguistic factor presents the highest level of difficulty faced by undergraduate students at Hamzanwadi University. The interview results indicated that the primary hindrance is related to students’ perconality. Students lacked confidence in deciding on a thesis topic and in writing appropriate literature reviews. The second factor involves sociocultural aspects, specifically understanding the university's cultural department regarding the format of thesis writing. Finally, the fourth factor is linguistic. Students struggled with paraphrasing sentences from sources into thesis writing, had a limited vocabulary, and did not pay attention to grammar. Keywords: students' difficulties, writing, proposal
