Abstract

This research aimed to find out was there any correlation between students’ anxiety level and their speaking performance. This research used quantitative approach with correlational study. The population was all the first grade students of MA NW Suralaga academic year 2024-2025. The samples of this research were 16 students taken by purposive sampling. Using FLCAS questionnaires by Hortwitz et al., (1986) consist of 33 statements and speaking test as instruments for collecting the data. Analyzed by using Spearman’s rho correlation, it found that 16 out 16 students at severe level anxiety, and most of students at low category on speaking performance test. The results of this study based on the statistical analysed, shown that the value of the correlation between students’ anxiety level and their speaking performance was -.749, so there was a strong negative correlation, while the N. Sig was less than .001 where the significance was <0.05. Thus, the result, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, it means there was a significance correlation between both variables. It means that the higher their anxiety level, the lower their speaking performance score while the lower their anxiety level, the higher score of speaking performance they can get.
