Abstract

This study aimed at knowing the students’ ability and difficulties in writing descriptive text for the tenth grade of MA NW Montong Baan in the school year 2017-2018. In this research there were two research questions formulated as follows : what are the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text ? and How is the students’ ability in descriptive text ?. This research was conducted at MA NW Montong Baan. The participant consisted of 10 students of the tenth grade of MA NW Montong Baan. The data were obtained by using questionare, writing test and recorder. After analyzing the data, the result of this research showed that the students’ ability in writing descriptive text were : students know the definition of descriptive text and they are able to distinguish between generic structure and language features of descriptive text, while the problems were : there were four common problems in writing descriptive text, those were : vocabulary, grammar, content, and organizing. So that the present researcher shows the conclusion of the data. Moreoever the biggest students’ problem is vocabulary. Keywords : ability and difficulties, writing skill, descriptive text
