Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out (1) the form of euphemism in the popular language, (2) the function of euphemism in the popular sasak language. This research formulates: (1) what forms of euphemism in the popular sasak language, (2) what are the functions of euphemism in the popular sasak language. This paper is the result of a qualitative descriptive study carried out in the village of Dames Damai with data or information extracted from imformen, direct observation, and documents using the reconnaissance method which has several techniques, namely tapping techniques or also known as basic techniques and advanced techniques. This advanced technique is carried out in three ways in phases, namely: (1)competent listening techniques, (2) competent free-seeing techniques, and (3) note taking techniques. Eufemism in the popular language is analyzed in terms of form and function. In terms of forms of euphemism found in the form of words, and sentences, in this study more euphemisms were formed in the form of words. Based on its function, the euphemism found in this study has three functions, namely: (1) as a refiner of meaning, including functions of hospitality and respect, (2) to maintain steadfastness, and (3) to suggest something unpleasant.
