Abstract
This study explores students’ perceptions in participating General English program at Hamzanwadi University, focusing on both challenges and positive outcomes. This research is a qualitative descriptive design with a narrative approach. The data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews to 20 participants, and document analysis of the General English report. The participants were the second-semester of English Department students selected through purposive sampling, and data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. The findings revealed that students encountered challenges related to affective barriers such as speaking anxiety, lack of confidence, and fear of making mistakes, as well as pedagogical issues including, monotonous teaching methods that can reduce motivation. Then Linguistic limitations such as, vocabulary mastery and language production. Furthermore, time management conflicts between academic and Ma’had obligations and difficulties in social interaction. Nevertheless, some students stated that they did not face significant challenges due to the program is enjoyable and manageable. Despite these challenges, students highlighted positive outcomes including linguistic improvement in speaking, grammar, and vocabulary then increased self-confidence and reduced anxiety also enhanced motivation to continue learning English. In short, the program is perceived as beneficial for academic and career preparation, fostering social connections, and supporting personal growth and broader knowledge.
