Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' motivation in developing reading habits and to identify the factors that support and hinder it. This study uses a mixed method. To collect quantitative data, the researcher used a questionnaire involving 90 students at SMPN 2 Sikur, but only 64 respondents completed the questionnaire. Qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. The results showed that most students fell into the moderate (39.06%) and high (32.81%) reading motivation categories, with an average score of 3.15. The main factors score of 3.15. The main factors supporting reading motivation are intrinsic motivation such as curiosity, enjoyment of reading, and the desire to gain knowledge. Extrinsic factors also play a role, such as encouragement from teachers and parents, although their influence is not yet consistent. The main obstacles identified include boredom, time constraints, and difficulty understanding texts, especially in foreign languages. Additionally, an suboptimal school environment, such as unattractive libraries and a lack of literacy activities, also poses challenges. This study concludes that intrinsic motivation has a significant influence on students' reading habits, so schools and parents need to create a supportive environment for reading habits to develop.
