Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of speech acts and the most dominant types of speech acts used in the main character of Maleficent. Speech acts is a theory that assumes that the meaning of linguistic expressions can be explained by following the rules that apply when performing speech acts, such as admonishing, declaring, ordering, begging, pleading, shortening, asking, and completing. Speech acts are divided into three types; locutionary acts, illocutionary acts, and perlocutionary acts. In this study, the illocutionary act is the main research because it is the most important speech act and is related to the intention of the speaker. The researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe and analyze selected speech acts taken from the script, then classify them based on John R. Searle's concept of the types of illocutionary acts. In this study, the researcher found that Maleficent uses all types of illocutionary acts: Representative, Directives Commissives, Expressives, and Declaratives. And the most dominant type of illocutionary act used by the main character in this film is representatives. Keywords: Speech acts, Illocutionary acts, Maleficent movie
